I cried when I finished the book, and it remains the only book to ever bring me to tears. The truth is, there is no clear, singular meaning to the book and Danielewski has largely avoided giving a set interpretation of the text. Ten minutes later, I left the store with the book in hand and my heart pounding from the bone-chilling prose that had worked its way into my brain and compelled me to read further.

House of Leaves is widely regarded as a modern classic, and the novel’s fans have wondered whether it will ever be adapted into a film or TV show since its publication. In 2018, Mark Z. Danielewski posted on Twitter (now known as X) a link to a pilot script he had developed from his debut novel. However, he clarified that he wrote the script as part of an experiment and had not yet secured any development deal. At times you need to read a few pages ahead as one narrator, then jump back to pick up the other one. In a way, it almost feels like a comic book in how the page layouts dictate how you read and digest the story. Truant, however, debunks The Navidson Record as a wholesale fabrication, citing his own findings that the film does not exist; that Navidson is a fictionalization of the real-life photojournalist Kevin Carter; and that Zampanò outright invented numerous sources and quotes. Truant also determines that Zampanò copied secondary sources to hide his own inexpertise in various subjects. More paradoxically, Truant notes that Zampanò purports to authoritatively write about filmmaking and cinematography despite being blind.
The rest of the book is punctuated by footnotes by Truant, whether fact-checking, editorializing, translating, or interjecting seemingly irrelevant personal anecdotes. Truant's work is further supplemented by uncredited professional editors, who profess to have, in turn, never met Truant. After Navidson mounts a terrifying expedition of one hallway in the doc–discovering an infinite labyrinth of plain, empty rooms–readers see that they’re also in a maze of pages.

The concepts pioneered in House of Leaves have become so ubiquitous to the horror genre that, at this point, it’s safe to say that many artists are referencing and “stealing” from the book without ever having read it. For example, it’s unlikely that The Backrooms’ Kane Pixels ever read the novel, but his trippy videos still perfectly capture the book’s liminal atmosphere by adapting ideas that have permeated popular culture in the two decades since House of Leaves was published. In The Navidson Records, Will Navidson moves his family — him, his wife and two young children — into a house in the suburbs, but discovers a door that leads to a dark hallway and, from there, a shifting, dark labyrinth hidden inside. Navidson’s attempts to explore and document the house’s inexplicable interior are what result in the Navidson Records. In the beginning of the book, Truant appears to be a normal, reasonably attractive young man who happens upon a trunk full of notes left behind by the now deceased Zampanò.

The book rewards second, third, and even ninth reads, with every textual inconsistency and font choice offering clues about the House’s secrets. The narrative unfolds through multiple layers, including footnotes, appendices, and unconventional formatting, creating an immersive and challenging reading experience that mirrors the disconcerting events within the story.
The shifting narrative perspectives and unreliable narrators contribute to the novel’s enigmatic nature. Readers are left to question the authenticity of the events, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. The open-ended conclusion invites readers to contemplate the nature of truth, perception, and the impact of storytelling on one’s psyche. And yet, while all of that certainly makes House of Leaves unique and noteworthy, none of it is my favorite part of the novel. Danielewski wrote this when I was still studying film at New York University. There I would write deep-dive research papers about movies with all kinds of footnotes and citations.
The film concludes with Navidson and Karen marrying, and reuniting their family in Vermont. Flouting conventions of academic writing, Zampanò narrates the lives of the Navidson family during the events depicted in The Navidson Record, set in April 1990, including unfilmed events sourced from media and public records. The family are Will Navidson; his unmarried partner, Karen Green, a former fashion model; and their two children, Chad and Daisy.

Navidson, still investigating the house, sought explanations from laboratory analysis, only to learn that samples taken from the maze are older than the Earth itself. Much of the film is described as footage from several ventures into a dark hallway which appears in the living room. Forbidden by Karen from entering, Navidson delegated exploration to a crew of professional explorers, who found, beyond the hallway, a maze-like complex containing an enormous spiral staircase which appears to descend endlessly. In the maze, they recorded footage of a multitude of corridors and rooms, completely unlit and featureless, with smooth ash-gray walls, floors, and ceilings. The maze is said to be silent save for the sound of a periodic low growl, which is never fully explained. Symbolism permeates “House of Leaves,” with the house itself representing the depths of the human psyche.
Due to its structure, House of Leaves doesn’t work well as an audiobook, but Peters listened to a bootleg version on YouTube before he discovered a braille copy around 1,400 pages long. In part, House of Leaves is also about obsession, a trait it demands from its readers; to simply finish the book, with its deliberately complex structure, is an act of dedication – for some more than others. LA’s infamous Museum of Jurassic Technology sells copies of the book in its gift shop, even though none of its exhibits explicitly relate to the Navidson Record. Another mystery, perhaps, but Danielewski and the Museum’s curators might share a kind of amused ambivalence. “Satire” is another genre House of Leaves fits into, and anybody who’s slogged through film theory will get a very precise chuckle over it telling a ghost story in the language of a term paper.
Originally published in 1979 by Bantam Books, the mass market paperback was reissued in the early ’80s but has been out of print for over 40 years. There is no House of Leaves Movie release date as the film doesn’t seem to have been greenlit yet.
